PLAN & DESIGN WITH BLOCKBUILD

BLOCKBUILD stands as a Structural Engineered Design (SED), employing a confined masonry system that significantly reduces the use of steel and concrete in walls compared to traditional concrete block masonry. This innovation not only ensures earthquake and fire resistance but also positions it as a cost-competitive material for construction in New Zealand.

Our architectural practice, MacPherson Architecture (M.A.L), exclusively embraces Porotherm clay block in our designs. A testament to our commitment stands within a 5-minute drive from Cambridge—a two-level home showcasing timeless modernity. Solid clay block walls and an exterior clay facade brick, paired with breathable lime plasters, create an aesthetically pleasing and eco-friendly show home abode.

We believe everyone deserves a home that surpasses the typical 10-year warranty. To show appreciation, those choosing Porotherm will receive a gift of ornamental or native trees from Robyn & Chris MacPherson, symbolising a shared commitment to building a better future.

With testimonials pouring in from Kiwis across New Zealand, from Queenstown to Mangawhai, endorsing this innovative way of building and living, we believe BLOCKBUILD homes offer a much-needed solution to a longstanding housing crisis.

All YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BLOCKBUILD

BLOCKBUILD clay block opens up limitless design opportunities. All plumbing and electrical feeds are neatly housed in conduits, seamlessly integrated as needed.

The blockwork follows a typical running bond beam pattern, expertly laid using DryFix structural foam adhesive. Most builds opt for internal rendering with mineral lime plaster, eliminating the need for GIB© and ensuring a fully breathable interior.

As a classified 'confined masonry' system, the block range includes options for both interior non-load-bearing walls and structural load-bearing walls, providing flexibility and versatility in construction.

BLOCKBUILD offers a range of block sizes, complemented by accessory blocks such as lintels and portals, all meticulously design-engineered to meet the specific requirements of each project and seismic region according to the NZ building code.

Compared to traditional concrete confined masonry methods, BLOCKBUILD can be up to 4 times faster to lay. The amount of steel and concrete required is determined by the engineering detail in the lintels, over the openings, and the portals installed.

BLOCKBUILD blocks outperform standard timber frame construction, delivering exceptional thermal insulation properties. This makes them an ideal material for achieving optimal warmth, cooling, and high acoustic performance in building projects.
